Autumn and Winter bring with them many fantastic things, autumn leaves, crisp fresh air, time with friends and family and of course, some excellent food. But it can also be a difficult time for older adults and retirees.
Shorter and colder days in autumn and winter can make it more difficult to keep active, get outside and can impact us psychologically, even leading to conditions like Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Our wellbeing is essential at any time of the year, and Santhem Retirement Villages provide physical and mental stimulation to support all resident especially in autumn and winter.
What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?
Research by the Mental Health Foundation suggests that, though the exact causes of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) are unclear, it’s often linked to the reduced amount of sunlight in Autumn and Winter.
Our bodies use sunlight to regulate internal systems, like sleep, appetite and mood and less sunlight can lead to hormones imbalances, which make us feel off-kilter. Some of these imbalances include: reduced production of melatonin (sleep hormone) and serotonin (often referred to as the “feel-good” hormone). As a result, we may exhibit symptoms similar to depression: sadness, a lack of energy, anxiety, isolation, and even suicidal tendencies.
If you feel that you have Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), it is important to seek professional help and speak to your doctor. However, there are ways to help yourself, such as regular exposure to natural light, exercise in green space, the use of a lightbox (a special lamp which mimics natural light patterns).
